Tips to Minimize Your Animal-Vehicle Collision Risk

Animal Vehicle Collision bolt Insurance

Animals are incredible; however, when it comes to safe driving, they can be a serious risk. Imagine the damage that a large Buck can do to your vehicle if you collide with it? Not to mention the damage it can do to you!

Animal and car collisions are not uncommon in the US.  In fact, an estimated one to two million animal-related vehicle collisions happen every year in the US. These accidents increase during the fall and winter months, as a result of reduced daylight, inclement weather, and changes in migratory patterns.

Fortunately, there are ways that you can reduce your chances of colliding with an animal while you are driving.  Keep the following tips in mind and you’ll improve your safety, and the safety of animals.

Be Extra Alert at Dusk and Dawn

The period when the sun is rising and setting is a very active time for animals. Add to that the fact that there is less daylight and decreased visibility for you and there is an increased chance of being involved in an accident with an animal.

Make sure you are well aware of your surroundings during these times so that you can spot any animals on the road and avoid a collision.

Keep an Eye on the Signs

There will usually be signs posted in areas where there is a lot of wildlife. For example, you may see a deer crossing or bear crossing sign in an area. When you see these signs, make sure you slow your speed and that you are on high alert.

There’s Usually More Than One

If you see a deer or a duck crossing the street, there is probably going to be more than one. Many animals travel in packs, so if you see one, your chances of seeing another are pretty good. Keep your eyes peeled and look out for any other animals that may be following after the one you initially saw.

Go Slow

Always go slow in wooded areas, around ponds or lakes, or other areas where animals usually live. Remember, these areas are their home; you are merely a visitor. Go slow and be aware that they may make an appearance while you are driving.

Keep these tips in mind when you are driving and you can greatly reduce your chances of being involved in a potentially costly and fatal collision with an animal. And remember, you can mitigate your animal-vehicle collision costs with the right auto insurance policy.
