Running a small business on your own can be challenging to say the least. Among the many challenges you face is that of staying healthy. These are a few things you should include in your daily routine to keep your health on track and on target while you run a business out of your home.
Make Exercise Your First Task of Each Day
Exercise is critical for getting oxygen flowing to the brain and kicking your metabolism in gear. Doing this at the beginning of the day lets your body, and mind, know it’s time to dig in and get to work. More importantly, exercise gets your blood flowing freely so that every part of your body is getting the fuel it needs.
Get Up and Move Frequently
People who work from home don’t have the same “office distractions” that people who work in other environments get. It’s easy to get wrapped up in what you’re doing and spend long hours sitting. This isn’t good for you, your body, or your productivity (at least over the long term).
It’s important to get up and move frequently throughout the day — it will improve your workflow as well. Set a timer so that you get up and move around every 45 minutes or so or considering working standing or walking on a treadmill for part of your day. Taking breaks will help reduce the risk of developing computer vision syndrome as well. Other tips include standing while talking on the phone or using a treadmill desk while you work.
Nix the Coffee Fix
Coffee might be a great way to get the day started, but it can become a crutch that has you packing away extra calories (if filled with calorie-laden flavored creamers) or robs you of much needed sleep at night when you drink it too late in the day. Switch that afternoon cup of Joe for a bottle of water or decaffeinated tea that helps you keep your brain hydrated without muddying things up with caffeine.
Eat Healthy
Not only that, hold yourself accountable for what you eat and how often you eat. It’s too easy to consume a steady stream of snacks at the desk, but this isn’t good for you. If you aren’t careful, you can pack on a few pounds before you know what’s hit you. Make a point of eating all meals and snacks away from your desk (or work area). If it takes you away from the work you’re doing, or interrupts your flow, you’ll be much more conscious of what you’re eating and when.
Choose Ergonomic Office Furniture
Your chair is one of the most important pieces of office furniture you’ll purchase. You need an ergonomic chair with adequate support for your back and one that you can sit comfortably in for long hours. Additionally, you need to pay attention to things like monitor height, desk height, and even the shape of your keyboard and mouse. These things impact your long-term health and comfort and can reduce eyestrain, stress headaches, back problems, carpal tunnel pain, and more. Other workplace ergonomics, including proper lighting in your home office.
Respect Your Office Hours
This is the number one thing you must do when working from a home office for the sake of your personal happiness, happiness of your family, and your health. It’s too easy to slip back into the office to handle a few more tasks, but robs you of important time to take a step back, decompress, and connect with your family (and other members of society). Set office hours and close up shop when they’re over for the day.
Staying safe, sane, and healthy when working from home is a snap when you follow great advice like this.
