It’s getting to that time of year where we all love to get into the great outdoors and enjoy a BBQ. Those long summer days are filled with fun and the opportunity to spend quality time with friends and loved ones. However, it is important that fire safety is not overlooked when you’re cooking outdoors.
The National Fire Protection Agency warns us that we should all stay safe during outdoor BBQs by following their guidelines. In addition to ensuring we have adequate homeowners insurance, it is important to note these dos and don’ts which will ensure your outdoor cooking sessions are safe.
General Tips
Do
- – Remember that charcoal and propane BBQs should only ever be used outdoors.
- – Place the grill far away from leaves, overhanging branches, deck railings, combustible materials and the home in general.
- – Keep pets and children away from the BBQ area.
- – Keep your grill clean at all times. Always remember to clean far build-up and grease from the grill and the grill trays.
- – Keep a fire extinguisher handy at all times.
Don’t
- – Leave your grill unattended.
- – Pour water on to flare ups, as this will just make them worse and then injury can occur.
- – Leave the grill unsupervised. There should always be a responsible adult present at all times
- – Turn the gas on with the lid closed. This will cause a buildup of gas which could cause an explosion.
- – Grill lots of fatty meats at the one time. Grease has the potential to ignite.
Propane grills
Do
- – Always check the connection points and tighten if loose.
- – Check the hose for potential gas leaks by applying a solution of soap and water to the hose, turning on the propane tank and looking for bubbles. If any appear, don’t use the BBQ and have it serviced by a professional. If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately.
Charcoal grills
Do
- – Always use charcoal starter fluid.
- – Always store charcoal fluid out of the way of children and pets and far away from sources of heat.
- – Allow the coals to cool completely before throwing them away in a metal container.
Don’t
- – Ever add flammable liquids or charcoal fluid to the fire
