Fourth of July Safety Tips

Fourth of July Safety Tips Bolt

When Fourth of July rolls around, it is time for swimming in the pool or ocean, grilling with family, and watching the fireworks. Perhaps you want to get some fireworks and sparklers of your own, or are not sure about the safety of your grilling methods. These tips will help you remain safe during this fun holiday.

Be Careful While Grilling

To start with, you need to be careful when you are grilling. Many people think of the fireworks when considering safety on Fourth of July, but grilling can be just as dangerous, if not more so.

Make sure you are using the right fluid for the type of grill you have. For example, if you are using a gas barbecue, don’t use lighter fluid for a propane grill. Also make sure the grill is a good distance from the home and placed outside. Don’t leave the grill while it is cooking for any reason. Have someone assist you by bringing out plates, cooking tools, meat, and anything else you need. Long-handled grilling tools are best.

Know How to Use Fireworks Safely

In 2011, nearly 18,000 fires were started by fireworks, resulting in $32 million dollars in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Agency.

Whether you use fireworks, because they are legal in your area, or you decide to go with sparklers, you need to be sure you are using them safely. Never, under any circumstances, attempt to make your own fireworks. No YouTube video is going to save you from a serious incident while making them. Also follow these important tips:

  • Don’t use fireworks unless you have a fire extinguisher close to you.
  • Light sparklers and fireworks in a dry area.
  • Don’t let young children handle sparklers without supervision.
  • Never point sparklers at anyone.
  • Don’t disassemble fireworks or use in a way aside from their instructions.

Use Proper Sun and Water Protection

Since your family will likely be outdoors during Fourth of July, be sure they are wearing proper sun protection. They should wear it all day, but reapply their sunscreen during the hottest time of the day. The sun is at its highest between 11 am and 4 pm.

Use a sunscreen with a high spf, such as 30 or 50. When in the sun, avoid illness and dehydration by avoiding caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Drink lots of water. Wear eye and feet protection at the beach. If your family will be swimming in a pool, make sure adults are nearby to supervise.

Be Careful With Your Pets

Fourth of July can be a scary and dangerous time for your pets. Don’t leave your dogs outside when the fireworks start, even if you feel they are a good distance away. Dogs have great hearing and are often fearful of them. Make sure you also be careful with outdoor grilling near the pets, and keep sparklers away from them. Keep your pets indoors as much as you can.

Be sure you have adequate insurance coverage for accidents and damage occurred as a result of Fourth of July activities, and look into adding an umbrella insurance policy for additional coverage above and beyond your standard insurance policies.
